Education inequity is everywhere: sometimes, obvious and flashy, and sometimes, so minor that it's hard for those not affected to even notice. Unfortunately, it's not an issue that will go away quickly, because the American education system is constructed in such a way that makes issues like this hard to dismantle. That doesn't mean it's not worth it to at least try, so here are some ways that you, either as an individual or part of a group can combat education inequity.
This common environmental phrase applies to education as well. Textbooks, notebooks, practice cards-- all of these things should NOT be thrown away at the end of the year. You can pass them along to next year's students, ask the teacher if they need them, or even go so far as to start a resource drive.
One key to equity is accessibility. At Simple Studies, we want our content to be available to everyone. We welcome you to sign up as a content creator!
Speak at your school board, work with student government, talk with your school's administration-- see what can be done!
Teachers need our support! Even if it's as simple as a teacher appreciation gift or a card from the class, our teachers are the backbone of the education system, as broken as it may be.
A lot of us have at least a few books that we've either never read or will never read again. Donate them to your local library or even your school's library to give them a second life!
Finding and sharing free resources with your peers can help them succeed in their classes-- sometimes, a study guide can make all the difference. Our outreach team would love to have you, but this doesn't necessarily need to be through an organization. Make it YOUR mission to help match students with resources they need.
