In the ever-changing digital age we live in, the need for diversity and inclusivity is more necessary than ever before. However, within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, the gender gap proves to be a persistent problem. With the dramatic increase in technological advancements and continuous demand for innovation, the stereotypes and stigma revolving around women and girls within the tech field specifically need to be shattered.

Though there are a multitude of reasons to join the industry, here are three reasons why you as a girl should consider (and hopefully pursue!) a tech career specifically:

  1. High Salaries

Though it may be a well-known fact to most, pursuing a career in tech allows for excellent earning potential. The high demand for professionals in the technology field means many jobs offer generous salaries, perks, and career prospects. The earlier you get into tech, the more opportunities and benefits that will be offered!

  1. Safe Career

A big reason to pursue a career within the technology sphere is the myriad of transferable skills that can be attained; you’ll have plenty of doors open! A career in tech is considered safe not only because of the opportunities, but also because of the constantly growing demand. As more businesses embrace digital transformation, the need for tech skills continues to rise globally. Additionally, a career in tech is a career with long-term relevance. As technology becomes more integrated into day-to-day life, skills within the tech industry will remain relevant for a long time!

  1. Abundant Remote Work Opportunities

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many jobs found that the nature of tech work is adaptable, remote, and flexible. Being able to work remotely allows one to have a better work-life balance and experience less stress. Remote work rewards one the freedom of customizing your workspace and saving on commute expenses.

Navigating the technology industry can be hard, especially if you don’t know where to start. If you’re a girl or identify as non-binary or genderfluid and are searching for great resources and programs, be sure to check out Girls Who Code, who will be releasing applications for their free and remote fall coding program soon. You should also check out Kode with Klossy, whose applications for summer programs will be released in the spring!

These reasons are specifically true to technology fields, but they apply to most other STEM positions as well. The more women and girls that join these fields, the more present our voices become.
